Belgium: His Majesty King Philippe, King of the Belgians, visits Ecosteryl

On February 28, 2024, His Majesty King Philippe, King of the Belgians, joined us to discover our company to better understand the treatment and valorization of infectious medical waste. Founder Philippe Dufrasne and co-directors Amélie Matton (CEO), Olivier Dufrasne, and Romain Dufrasne presented the company and its activities.

Ecosteryl, which has been in existence since 1947, has been manufacturing infectious medical waste treatment machines since the 2000s. These machines shred and decontaminate hospital waste by means of a microwave-based system and exposure to high temperatures (100°C for 1 hour). Ecosteryl’s machines are exported to more than 65 countries worldwide.

For half an hour, His Majesty King of the Belgians discovered the machines and the process. He was particularly interested in the circularity that Ecosteryl enables through its treated waste, which is dry. By recently commercializing a sorting center, Ecosteryl is leading the way in the circular economy of medical waste. Recycling is now being considered.

Founder Philippe Dufrasne pointed out to His Majesty the King of Belgians, “This now allows us to recycle waste that was originally one of the most dangerous in the world.

For 45 minutes, Ecosteryl administrators met with His Majesty the King of Belgians to discuss the future of the company and possible partnerships. The administrators are: Sabine Colson, Sylvie Crêteur, Anne Wautier, and Bernard Gilliot

His Majesty the King of Belgians particularly appreciated that Ecosteryl was nominated for the Circular Business Award by the Federation of Enterprises in Belgium (FEB) and that it is currently undergoing an audit to receive the B-Corp label. His Majesty the King of Belgians mentioned the importance of partnerships to minimize infections in hospitals, from care and admissions to waste and its treatment.
