Morocco produces more than 22,000 tons of medical waste each year. This waste, among the most challenging to handle and process, poses a hazard due to its potentially infectious content. To address this challenge, MedWaste has opened a medical waste treatment centre in the industrial area of Sidi Bernoussi, north of Casablanca, since January 2024.

MedWaste’s commitment to a sustainable future for medical waste

Medwaste Maroc Dasri DéchetsMedWaste was founded by Mr. Tazi, a native of Casablanca with an MBA in finance, who decided to return to Morocco and launch a sustainable project. Inspired by his father, a paediatric neurologist, and his father-in-law, a surgeon, Mr. Tazi developed a keen interest in the problematic treatment of medical waste.

“I heard complaints about the poor management of waste from several health facility managers and health professionals. I investigated the issue to the point of making it my new profession.”

MedWaste has committed to working with public and private health actors in Morocco to offer a comprehensive solution that includes the collection and disinfection of hazardous waste.

Choosing an Ecosteryl machine to treat medical waste in Casablanca

Medwaste Dasri MarocMedWaste has invested in a 100% electric machine using microwaves, the Ecosteryl 125.
“The Ecosteryl machine uses only electricity, whereas competitors might use steam, gas, water, or chemicals. Additionally, the waste, which is reduced by 80% in volume, emerges unrecognisable and shredded, making it ideal for sorting and recovery. This technology represents a real step forward in the more ecological and efficient treatment of medical waste in Casablanca.”

MedWaste emphasises the traceability of medical waste treatment

MedWaste Maroc camionsThe daily operation of a treatment centre begins with the collection of medical waste. MedWaste trucks travel across the country to bring waste from clinics and care centres to the treatment centre.

“We track every bin, every container. The clinic can always know where its waste is and whether the process is correct. It’s important for the health facility, which remains responsible, to know that its waste is properly treated.”

Upon arrival at the centre, the medical waste is disinfected. With the Ecosteryl 125, MedWaste can shred 175 kg of waste per hour and then ensure a 6log10 disinfection. “We are the only operators in the Greater Casablanca region with a 100% electric treatment line.”

These exemplary traceability and disinfection procedures ensure not only secure waste management but also complete transparency for the clients.

In the future ? The possibility of valorising disinfected waste!

MedWaste hopes to take another step forward in the future by sorting and recycling shredded and disinfected waste, which currently goes to landfills. “Waste is a resource, and we would like to demonstrate that. The plastic industry here in Morocco is keen to recycle waste.”

We warmly congratulate the entire MedWaste team for this remarkable achievement. Their dedication and vision have enabled the establishment of a medical waste treatment service that is not only efficient but also environmentally friendly.
