The Netherlands will have 250 Ecosteryl installed this year in 2024 to decontaminate their medical waste. A first for our neighbours. Exchanges with their management, Mr. Cees Duijn and Mrs. Maja van den Handel.

When was this project initiated?

We met your client from the Philippines, who recommended you. We came to discover Ecosteryl in 2022. We were impressed by the machines, their capabilities and ease of use.

The project took a little over 2 years, is that long?

Indeed, it took a little longer than we expected. But the most important step was to analyze the Dutch law, specifically the “LAP-3, Sectorplan-19, Revision April-2022”.
I think every country has its own constraints and specific standards with very particular codes. We explained why medical waste recycling should be allowed and our project was validated and certified. Our project was supported by the “NL Green Deal Sustainable Care 3.0” with the aim of minimizing CO2 emissions. Recently, we obtained our permit for our Velsen Noord site. We also received European subsidies amounting to 2.3 million euros. This period also allowed us to meet many stakeholders and hospitals.

Why did you choose Ecosteryl?

Of course, we compared all the options on the market. But Ecosteryl machines are 100% electric with microwave treatment. This allows us to have relatively dry waste, with about 15% moisture. Which is ideal for achieving a high level of purity for the sorting and recycling of medical waste that we want to operate downstream.

Your Velsen Noord site will be operational in 2024, will the next few months be intensive?

We need to develop the site, prepare the factory to properly install the machines by August 2024. We are also developing our contracts to have more medical waste to treat and maximize the recycling of valuable materials.

What are your plans for the future?

When our Velsen Noord site is fully operational, we will develop other platforms in the Netherlands, each capable of processing 3000 tons per year.
